Yahoo Mail archive: how to archive emails and keep a copy on your hard drive
The Yahoo Mail archive is a folder: pressing Archive moves a message out of the inbox and into it, nothing more. If you want archived Yahoo emails on your own hard drive, Yahoo offers no export, so the route is IMAP into a desktop client, then EML, MBOX or PST files, and PDFs for the messages you need to read or share. The PDF step runs in your browser without uploading anything.
What the Yahoo Mail archive is
In Yahoo Mail, Archive is a button in the toolbar above an open message and in the message list. It moves the message to the Archive folder, keeps it searchable and leaves it counting toward your storage. It does not delete anything and it does not create a copy anywhere else.
That makes the Yahoo Mail archive useful for a tidy inbox and useless as a backup. If Yahoo closes the account, or you lose the password, the Archive folder goes with it. The sections below cover both uses: managing the folder, and then getting the mail out.
Have the email as a file (EML, MSG, MBOX)? Convert it to PDF in your browser: nothing is uploaded.
Where is the archive folder in Yahoo Mail, and how to find archived emails
- On the web, look at the folder list on the left. Archive sits with Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Spam; if the list is collapsed, click the arrow next to Folders or scroll down.
- In the Yahoo Mail app, tap the menu or the Folders tab and choose Archive.
- To find a specific archived email, use the search box at the top; search covers Archive by default. Add a sender name or a date range to narrow it down.
- To retrieve an archived email, open it and use Move to Inbox, or drag it onto Inbox in the folder list.
Archived mail has no expiry. Unlike Trash and Spam, which Yahoo empties on its own schedule, the Archive folder keeps messages until you delete them or the account itself is removed.
Why are my Yahoo emails going to archive, and how to stop it
Yahoo Mail has no auto-archive rule, so messages that land in Archive got there by an action. The usual causes are a swipe gesture in the mobile app, where one swipe direction defaults to Archive, and the keyboard shortcut E on the web, which archives the selected message.
- In the app, open Settings, then Swipe actions, and change the archive swipe to something else such as Mark as read.
- On the web, open Settings, More Settings, and turn off keyboard shortcuts if you trigger them by accident.
- Check Filters under More Settings: a filter can move mail into any folder, including Archive, if someone set it up that way.
How to archive Yahoo mail to your hard drive
Yahoo has no "download all mail" option like Google Takeout. The reliable path is IMAP: a desktop client downloads your folders, and from there you save files. Thunderbird is free; Outlook desktop works if you already have it. Both need an app password from Yahoo, because normal passwords are not accepted by third-party clients.
- In Yahoo Mail on the web, open Account Info, then Security, then Generate app password. Name it "Thunderbird" or "Outlook" and copy the password shown.
- Thunderbird: Account Settings, Account Actions, Add Mail Account. Enter your Yahoo address and the app password; Thunderbird fills in imap.mail.yahoo.com on port 993 automatically. Outlook: File, Add Account, enter the address, choose IMAP if asked, and use the same app password.
- Wait for the folders, including Archive, to download. Click each folder once so the full messages, not just headers, are fetched.
- To save messages as files: in Thunderbird, select one or more messages and use Save As to get .eml files; the whole folder also exists as an MBOX file inside the Thunderbird profile directory. In Outlook, drag a message to a desktop folder for .msg, or use File, Open & Export, Import/Export to write a .pst.
- Copy the .eml, .mbox or .pst files to an external drive or a folder in Drive or OneDrive. The flash drive guide covers naming and folder layout.
Why not just forward everything to another address? Forwarding rewrites the headers, so the From, Date and Message-ID of the original are lost. The IMAP route keeps the message exactly as received.
Save single Yahoo messages as PDF
For a handful of messages you only need to read later, print is enough: open the message, click the three dots, choose Print, and pick Save as PDF as the printer. The text stays searchable because the browser lays out real text, not an image. Attachments are not included in a print; download them separately.
For messages you exported as EML, MSG or MBOX, drop the file on the EML to PDF converter. The message opens in the tab with From, To, Cc, Date, Subject and Message-ID at the top, inline images in place, and the attachments listed for download. Press Save as PDF. Nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed. An MBOX from Thunderbird lists every message so you can open and save each one; a merged PDF of a whole folder is not something the converter makes. How to delete archived emails in Yahoo
Once a backup exists, the Archive folder can be emptied without worry. Open the folder, tick the select-all box at the top of the list, and choose Delete; Yahoo asks for confirmation if the selection spans more than the visible page. Deleted messages go to Trash, from which Yahoo removes them on its own schedule. To delete only older mail, sort the folder by date first and select from the top down.
Frequently asked questions
What does archive mean on Yahoo Mail?
It moves the message from the inbox to the Archive folder. The message is kept, remains searchable and still uses storage; nothing is deleted or copied elsewhere.
Where is the archive folder in Yahoo Mail?
In the folder list on the left of the web view, alongside Inbox, Sent and Spam. In the app it is under Folders. If you do not see it, expand the folder list.
How long do emails stay in the Yahoo archive?
Indefinitely. Only Trash and Spam are emptied automatically. Archived messages disappear only if you delete them or the account is closed.
How do I find archived emails in Yahoo?
Open the Archive folder, or use the search box, which includes archived messages by default. Move to Inbox puts a message back.
How do I stop auto-archive in Yahoo Mail?
There is no auto-archive setting. Change the swipe action in the app's Settings, turn off keyboard shortcuts on the web, and check Filters for a rule that moves mail into Archive.
How do I delete all archived emails in Yahoo?
Open the Archive folder, use the select-all checkbox, confirm the full selection when prompted, and press Delete. Back the folder up first if any of it matters.
